Review: PurePharma O3

PurePharma O3 Fish Oil Review | The Paleo FixFish oil is one of our “must take” supplements for the vast majority of people. If you haven’t yet, head on over to check out our article on why you should be taking fish oil. Read up on why you should be taking vitamin D and magnesium while you’re at it. Check our corresponding reviews for PurePharma D3 and PurePharma M3 as well.

Source

PurePharma source their O3 from sardines and anchovies off the coast of South America. This ensures the lowest possible toxicity and heavy metal accumulation in the fish. Many other fish oils come from the oxidized carcasses of other larger fatty fish that end up at your supermarket. PurePharma uses the whole fish to get you all of the beneficial fats and none of the harmful chemicals.

PurePharma O3 is sourced sustainably as mentioned above and certified for that through stricly enforced 3rd party, Friends of the Sea (FOS). They go through rigorous bycatch avoidance (read our article on sourcing seafood for more info) and 100% of raw materials go to use. Any oil that is not used for supplements is then used as biofuel or for fertilizer for plants. Fantastic.

Concentration

The eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are what you should be looking for when buying fish oil. Unfortunately, many off brands will have such low concentrations of these fatty acids, you might as well not be taking it. The reason we love PurePharma so much is that it is dosed higher than many other brands out there. Each serving size (three capsules) contains 2000mg omega 3, 1300mg EPA, and 520mg DHA. You can do your own analysis and comparison if you’d like, but this is some of the best in the supplement industry.

Oxidation Prevention

If you recall in our article about why you should be taking fish oil in the first place, a way you can prevent any possible oxidation from the fish oil is supplement in conjunction with vitamin E. Well, PurePharma was smart enough in this case to put a little bit of vitamin E in the form of tocopherols in their fish oil blend as a protective agent against oxidation. Win win! I would still refrigerate the fish oil to help extend the life and prevent oxidation.

Taste

There are no fish burps with PurePharma O3. They’ve included lemon as an added benefit. Not only does it prevent oxidation in the fish oil, if you taste anything, it is a nice lemon aftertaste. This is not the same type of choke-it-down feeling you have with other liquid based fish oils that are on the market.

If you ever open a fish oil bottle and it smells off, toss it. The oil is oxidized and no longer useful as a supplement.

PurePharma O3 Summary

PurePharma has only three products, and their O3 was the first. It apparently took forever to develop and perfect, but they’ve done a hell of a job doing so. Each step has been perfected. From sourcing and catching the appropriate fish, to concentration, to processing it with no waste, to capsulizing it to prevent any oxidation, to getting certified by the most rigorous third parties, PurePharma has done it all. When looking at the concentration is also one of the most affordable products on the market at well. There’s not really much else you could ask for in a fish oil supplement!
